Before pressing the shutter button on a digital SLR camera, the mirror that provides the image to the viewfinder (or LCD screen for cameras with Live View) is set in a downward position. When the shutter button is pressed to take a picture, the mirror moves up while the camera is processing the image. While the mirror is in this upward position no image is displayed. This is normal operation.
